‘in the pursuit of quality

We are an architectural practice focused on the pursuit of quality, from the initial concept design through to the delivery of the completed building.

Architecture is a blend of complex forces, from the needs dictated by individuals to the performance of building materials. The focus of every project must include a commitment to understanding the culture, climate and identity of a place.

Through a commitment to this understanding, and a process of demanding design selection, clear goals can be established by the architect and client in order to produce a joint project vision. With wisely managed project programmes and clear cost control Nick Baker Architects are committed to the creation of architectural quality.

Our method of working is based on collaborative consideration. Models, 3D renderings, animations and hand sketches are critical tools of the language of communication, each serving to demonstrate the evolution of a design.

It is through these channels that we aim to produce buildings on time, on budget and with architectural excellence.

Quality of Thought

‘ Design by its nature in an interactive process. Ideas, concepts and inspiration take time and initiative to progress and develop. Time, context and momentum are all key components of the design process.

Wisely managed, these items combine to develop solutions of quality. Great ideas create great buildings, full of layers of thought, functionality and excellence. ‘

“ All facilitated by your expert management of the process and the detailed, informed and pro active approach of NBA with their design work. Thank you very much”

Quality of Design

‘ Designing buildings, spaces and places well takes time, ambition and skill. An Architect needs to understand and manage a complex array of ideas, practicalities and regulations. Many of these can challenge each other, competing for position and prominence.

Blending these elements together is a skill born of consideration, listening an inspiration. Quite an alchemy! Architecture is a compilation of effectively understanding the quality of space, of light and form. Layering these together, letting them relate and them shine.‘

Quality of Understanding

‘So many design projects are unique challenges. From the orientation of a building within its site boundaries, to the extent of circulation around the spaces being designed. The analysis of the range of parameters requiring consideration can be multivarious and contradicting.

Architecture can require the skills of a polymath as opposed to that of an Architect. It is with rigorous analysis and cultural empathy that designers look to understand both the technical and implied aspirations of clients.

These analytical and listening skills are constantly improving to develop a quality of understanding required for each project.’

Quality of Light

“All that we see is described by light and its brother shadow”.

‘Often, described as the architects singular most significant ‘tool’, light, it strength, its direction and its absence are critical to portraying the form that architects use to compile a building.

With daylight also comes energy. The sun’s power is today harnessed by photovoltaic and solar thermal panels to transfer it’s renewable energy to deliver support in the form of electricity, heat and cooling (Air Source Heat Pumps) to buildings.

Therefore the ability to understand the significance of light and its impact in todays world of climate change is more important then it has ever been.

Our approach has always been to understand that the single most significant design tool is light and its source, the sun. If we respect the sun and design ‘with’ it, we can make magnificent and sustainably responsible buildings for ours and the next generations.’

Quality of Materials

‘From the humble brick to the highly specified triple glazed window, a building is a portrayal of the materials used to create it. These materials in turn need to perform in multiple circumstances and to exciting standards.

Choosing the right materials is fundamental to achieving these aims. But they also need to capture the identity of the design and delight in its intentions. They should display the quality of thought and ambition of the building inherent design.’

Quality of Service

‘The ability to communicate clearly and effectively in drawn format is often understood as being an architects language. Seeing the 3rd dimension using flat 2D plans, sections and elevations is challenging for many of us.

Technology is forever improving this ability. Now we draw in 3D using software that includes many of the empirical technical data required. With the event of ever progressing Artificial Intelligence many of these presentations of volume and space are quicker to deliver. However, with speed can come misrepresentation. Qualitative, rigorous analysis and review are required to ensure that the service being provided is a realistic representation and a service of quality.

Delivering architectural projects requires a huge range of skills. From the moment of inspiration to the understanding of the financial pressures behind project funding, it is critical for the architect to understand the context of the design process. Our approach is to work with the client teams, consultant and statutory signatures to deliver projects on budget, on time and with architectural excellence.’
